The Locarno Summer Academy is a Festival del film Locarno pilot project that aims to further increase the value of the Festival to further the intra-generational exchange and transmission of knowledge, and thus sustain the flow of new blood into film, in Switzerland and abroad. Locarno Summer Academy is the name used to designate the various educational activities that happen as part of the festival, which will gradually be grouped together and integrated with new training proposals that include the participation of established filmmakers and notable international film industry representatives.
The Locarno Summer Academy is open to twenty international participants, and is aimed at young professionals who are taking their first steps in the film world, and film students.
The Festival planned a program of workshops, round tables, professional encounters and excursions that can be combined to fit the particular needs and interests of participants.
Speakers already confirmed for 2010: Swiss film maker Christian Frei (Space Tourists, The Giant Buddhas, War Photographer), German director and producer Maren Ade (Alle Anderen, Der Wald vor lauter Bäumen), German producer Peter Rommel (Andreas Dresen’s Wolke 9, Valeska Grisebach’s Sehnsucht), the director of the Cannes Cinéfondation, Georges Goldenstern (and the young directors supported by the Cinéfondation), casting director Beatrice Kruger (Rob Marshall’s Nine, Spike Lee’s Miracle at St.Anna).
The Locarno Summer Academy enjoys the support of Ernst Göhner Stiftung (Zug), which has committed to the next three editions, and is organised in collaboration with the Swiss Italian University Film Summer School.
The first Locarno Summer Academy will be held August 5th – 11th, 2010, as part of the 63rd edition of the Festival del film Locarno.
