The Jury for the Concorso Cineasti del presente will be presided over by German director Christoph Hochhäusler (This Very Moment, 2003; I Am Guilty, 2005; The City Below, 2010), joined by Italian director Michelangelo Frammartino (The Gift, 2003; The Four Times, 2010), Filipino director Raya Martin (Autohystoria, 2007; Independencia, 2009), Chinese producer Zhu Rikun (Karamay di Xu Xin, 2010) and the Greek producer and director Athina Rachel Tsangari (Dogtooth by Giorgos Lanthimos, 2009; Attenberg, 2010).

Christoph Hochhäusler

Christoph Hochhäusler - President of the Jury
Christoph Hochhäusler is one of the leading lights in the German New Wave. Born in 1972 in Munich, he studied architecture in Berlin and film direction at Munich’s University of Film and Television (HFF). In 1997 he founded the film journal Revolver for which he continues to write. In 2003 he made his first feature film, This Very Moment, followed by Low Profile (2005) and The City Below (2010), with the latter selected for Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section. In 2011 he made Eine Minute Dunkel, a segment in a three-part film Dreileben, made in collaboration with Christian Petzold and Dominik Graf. This project will be shown in its entirety at Locarno this year in the section Fuori concorso.

Athina Rachel Tsangari

Filmmaker and producer, Greece

Athina Rachel Tsangari
Born in Greece, Athina Rachel Tsangari divides her time between her native country and the USA, where she studied film. Her first feature film, The Slow Business of Going (2000), shot in nine cities around the world, was voted Best First Film in the Village Voice Critics’ Poll. In 2005 she founded the production company Haos Film, where she has developed and produced films by her compatriot Yorgos Lanthimos, Kinetta (2005) and Dogtooth (2009), which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes; and she is currently in post-production on his new feature, Alps. With the Duplass brothers she also co-produced Bryan Poyser’s Lovers of Hate (2010), screened at Sundance. Her last feature film as director was Attenberg (2010), selected for the Venice Festival.

Michelangelo Frammartino

Filmmaker, Italy

Michelangelo Frammartino
Michelangelo Frammartino was born in Milan in 1968 of Calabrian parents. He studied architecture and then moved on to the Civic School of Cinema in Milan. During his studies, he designed film sets, directed short films, video clips, video installations and independent films, and also taught visual arts to young children. Right from the start of his studies, he has been directing short films and experimental video installations. He has been teaching Principles of Directing at Bergamo University since 2005. His first film for the big screen was The Gift (2003), presented at the Festival del film Locarno, followed by Le quattro volte (2010), presented at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, for which he won the Europa Cinemas Label prize.

Raya Martin

Filmmaker, Philippines

Raya Martin
Born in 1984 in Manila, Raya Martin was the first Filipino filmmaker to be accepted in the Cinéfondation Résidence in Cannes. A Short Film About the Indio Nacional (or the Prolonged Sorrow of the Filipinos) (2005),his first feature film, won Best Film at the Pesaro Film Festival. His second feature, Autohystoria (2007), was awarded Best Film and Best Director at the Cinemanila International Film Festival. Now Showing (2008), an almost five-hour-long film, was screened at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2008. His following works Independencia (2009) and Manila (2009) were shown at Cannes in 2009, becoming the first Filipino to screen two films in the festival’s Official Selection in the same year. Independencia won Best Southeast Asian Film and the NETPAC award at the Bangkok International Film Festival 2009. His last film, Buenas noches, España(2011) is presented this year at Locarno in Fuori concorso.

Zhu Rikun

Zhu Rikun
Zhu Rikun is one of the most well-known and experienced personalities in the Chinese indie cinema scene. After studying finance and management from 1996 to 2000 at Beijing University, in 2001 he created Fanhall Studio, an independent distribution company whose goal was to stimulate the development of independent Chinese films. He has produced a number of the most interesting Chinese films in recent years such as Dream Walking (2005) by Huang Wenhai, Grand Prix of Cinema du réel in Paris, Petition by Zhao Liang (2009), presented at Cannes, Karamay by Xu Xin (2010), presented in the International Competition at Locarno, and Winter Vacation by Li Hongqi (2010), the 2010 Pardo d’oro winner. Until 2011, Zhu Rikun was the organizer of the Beijing Independent Film Festival and the Songzhuang Documentary Film Festival China.
